You may have seen them in encyclopedias or magazines and they are often referred to as “Long Neck Karen” or the “Giraffe” tribe. These ladies belong to the Kayan tribe and to the subgroup Padaung. Girls start wearing them at a tender age of 5 and more turns of the coil is added as they grow older. The women wear these coils as a cultural identity rather than to make them beautiful or unattractive (contradicting hypotheses of anthropologists).

Photo of the Day – Laotian Smile
I was walking towards the Pha That Luang temple and the sun was shining so bright at 4pm in the afternoon. I am just staying in Vientiane for 6 hours (check out my post here – Backpacking Laos: Vientiane) and I took the time to check out the famous sights. When I was taking a photograph of the temple, a lady vendor approached me speaking in Lao and I just smiled coz I can only say sabaidee and khawp jai. She was selling ice cream and it was pretty tempting because it was very hot and I was just resting under the shade of a tree. So I bought 1 stick of local ice cream (it was yummy) and I asked permission if I can take her picture. She agreed and gave a shy laugh when she saw her picture on the camera screen. To the lady vendor, khawp jai for the tasty ice cream and for the photo! 🙂
Photo of the Day – Floating Village Lady
This photo was taken at the Floating Village in Siem Reap. It is one of the alternative places that tourists can visit, aside from the temples in Angkor. Ladies row around the area where tourists can be found. Either to ask for alms (with small kids in tow), sell some food or to entice tourists to have their picture taken with a snake. This is their way of living. Their way of getting food on the table.

Photo of the Day – Rissani Man
This is Hisham. He works as a tour guide in Rissani, Morocco. The souks in Rissani are full of action every Thursday because it is their market day and people come to sell their goods like spices and goats. This was taken during our tour around the kasbah where some of the Berber families live. As we were going through one of the alleyways, the natural light from the sun was able to give this dramatic effect when he was explaining about the history of the place.
